This website is dedicated to those residents of
Hemsby who would like to have local allotments.
It would be wrong to think that this is
a new fad or that it is just fashionable to have an allotment.
Allotments have existed for over 100 years and people are increasingly
turning to greener ways of living. Allotment gardening has seen a
steady growth over the last five years or more.
Some Hemsby residents keep allotments outside
the village such as near the Horse Racing Course in Fremantle Road.
This is clearly not ideal in the current economic and environmental
circumstances. Most local villages already provide allotments, such
as; Winterton, Martham, Ormesby St Michael, Ormesby St Margaret, Belton
with Browston, Bradwell, Filby, Fleggburgh, Fritton with St Olaves,
Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Repps with Bastwick and Rollesby. Hemsby is
one of the few that does not provide these important facilities to it's
residents.
Generally it is
up to the Borough and Parish Councils as to whether they provide
allotments. However, there is a duty to provide allotments where
the Borough or Parish Council are of the opinion that there is a demand
for allotments in the Borough or Parish. This duty is set out in
section 23 of the Smallholdings and Allotment Act 1908. In considering
whether this duty arises, the Borough or Parish council must take into
account any representations signed by six or more electors or Council
Tax payers.
For this reason
a group of Hemsby resident have decided to champion the cause and muster
support for our own local allotments. Please help us by joining
our cause.
